Job Description:
The Education Coordinator is responsible for developing, promoting, and implementing all public education programs at the St. George Village Botanical Gardens.
DUTIES:
Coordinates, develops, and implements Second Saturdays workshops, a parent-child workshop held the second Saturday of each month;
Plans, schedules speakers for, and facilitates Grow and Learn workshops;
Trains as a Garden Tour Guide and then provides tours to prescheduled groups, especially to groups of schoolchildren;
Provides a variety of workshops on Garden themes to schoolchildren throughout the year;
Coordinates children’s activities at major Garden events, including, but not limited to, Mango Melee, Christmas Spoken Here, and Art in the Garden;
Initiates, researches, and develops new education programming;
Promotes all educational events through the newspaper, radio, email lists, the Garden website, Facebook, and other appropriate mediums;
Establishes evaluation criteria and implements evaluation methods for all educational programming.
Skills Required
The successful candidate will be a creative, self-motivated, goal and team-oriented individual. Qualifications include:
Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Botany, Environmental Science, or related field, or a teaching degree in science education is required. A two-year college degree in the aforementioned sciences will be allowed if the candidate has at least two years of experience in hands-on teaching of scientific subjects.
Master’s degree in Environmental Education, Environmental Science, Botany, or Biology with an interest in botany, is preferred.
At least one-year of experience in planning and executing non-traditional science teaching outside of a classroom setting. This requirement may be met through science or outdoor education teaching at summer camps, internships working with younger children, or a variety of other teaching venues.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Grant writing skills a plus.
Computer skills are essential, experience with Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, and PowerPoint preferred. The ability to work beyond traditional business hours may be required.
