Job Description:
The Underwriting Manager is responsible for all aspects of the new business process, including case design support (sales), licensing and appointments management, overseeing the insurance application process, underwriting execution and management to include medical records and insurance exams (pre and post), transaction closure, new business/underwriting reporting, commission forecasting, and implementation and service transition. Summary of Essential Job FunctionsJob duties include but are not limited to the following:· Work with Business Development during the “design” stage of a case to: provide underwriting consultation during case design, keep abreast of new potential cases for forecasting and staffing purposes, and advises on contracting matters of potential new business cases to ensure licensing and appointment compliance· Manages New Business Coordinators/New Business Analyst staff to ensure accurate and timely processing of all new business cases· Responsible for all aspects of the new business operational team including but not limited to hiring, training, assignment and direction of work flow, reporting, and performance measurement· Manage the insurance application process (where applicable) to insure packages to potential new business prospects are sent accurately and timely· Database management in terms of making sure files (server, database, and physical) are set up and maintained accurately· Insure new business packages are reviewed and documented accurately and timely and that outside agents are notified of missing documentation and are informed of the “next steps” in the same manner· Create custom cover letters and financial justification to insurance carriers to be submitted with the new application package· Manage the timely completion of accurate application packages to insurance carriers· Handle underwriting issues at the carrier and underwriting inquiries from agents, clients, and internal staff· Review and report on medical records and discuss underwriting issues with the underwriters at the insurance carriers· Manage the underwriting process and the New Business Analyst/Underwriting Coordinator to insure: constant follow up on unresolved requirements is made at the carrier and to the agent, agents are provided with weekly proactive updates on their cases, carriers are solicited twice a week for underwriting decisions when all requirements have been met, new business reports and database are updated constantly to reflect current status, underwriting issues are resolved in a timely manner, and Senior Management is kept abreast of issues effecting insurability and general case status · Upon policy approval, manage issuance process so that policy is issued and delivered timely, accurately (per final “signed-off” design by Business Development), and the correct commission splits have been recorded· Work closely with legal and finance to insure transaction is set up to close efficiently, which may include the opening of an LLC or corporate bank account and the creation of legal closing documents· Supervise staff to prepare complete and accurate transaction closing binders for presentation to agents and clients· Manage transaction closure issues (i.e. policy rewrites) and general closure inquiries from agents, clients, insurance carriers, and internal staff· Manage closing process after execution by insuring documents are accurately complete, filed, sent to the carrier for processing, policy placement, and client binders are sent to the client (where applicable)· Work closely with business development, legal, preferred partners and finance departments to insure transaction is closed accurately and completely; this may include creating payment schedules, coordinating with Legal to obtain operating agreements and other legal documents, maintaining closure tracking sheets, and coordinating closing meetings· Responsible for commission forecasting, research and reconciliation, and reporting |
