DESCRIPTION
The Director of the Division of Virgin Islands Cultural Education report directly to the Deputy Commissioner of Curriculum and Instruction and is the primary contact with schools and community groups for cultural development. The Director provides professional, technical, administrative, and innovative functions territorially and supervises all staff in the Division of Virgin Islands Cultural Education. This technical and supervisory position requires someone with a clear and demonstrable knowledge of the major elements of Virgin Islands Culture and must be capable of leading and supervising others.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (NOT ALL INCLUSIVE)

·         Coordinates, supervises and delegates assignments to staff to facilitate accomplishing the mission, goals and objectives of the Division;

·         Assesses cultural publications and materials for purchase and/or possible upgrading and revising in order to meet current technological and marketable standards;

·         Seeks out foreign language materials of value to VI Culture and arranges for their translations;

·         Compiles and prepares district reports of achievements, obstacles and concerns;

·         Researches and makes recommendation to policy and procedure; 

·         Supervises the planning, monitoring and evaluation of new programs;

·         Coordinates cross-curriculum projects, classes and events;

·         Assists with conflict resolutions and provides recommendations;

·         Oversees cultural demonstrations and presentations between the districts as well as oversees the coordination of travel accommodations, ground transportation, meals, site set up, awards ceremonies and rewards programs;

·         Coordinates with other jurisdictions and governments to set up cultural exchange initiatives where VI students will be the hosts or guests;

·         Assists with district and territorial training of teachers, paraprofessionals and community-based organizations in aspects of VI culture;

·         Performs other related duties as assigned by the Deputy Commissioner or his/ her designee. 


Skills Required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITIES

·         Knowledge of program planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation methods;

·         Knowledge of VI holidays, traditions, and trends;

·         Knowledge of the major elements of VI culture;

·         Knowledge of all cultures that have migrated to the VI and their contributions to the VI culture;

·         Ability to locate resources to achieve the mission of the Division of Cultural Education;

·         Ability to discern confidential and public information; 

·         Ability to instruct and impart knowledge;

·         Ability to condense, review, and assess reports;

·         Ability to negotiate and resolve conflicts;

·         Ability to lead and supervise others;

·         Ability to coordinate functions and delegate tasks;

·         Ability to develop and implement strategies to facilitate reconnaissance, travel, events production and wrap up;

·         Ability to use efficiently a variety of computer software to record, store, analyze and report culturally relevant data and information.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

·         Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Social Sciences, Culture, Education, or other related area and two (2) years of supervisory experience; or

 

·         Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Social Sciences, Culture, Education, or other related area and two (2) years of supervisory experience; or
